WHAT’S WITH EVANGELICALS?

As I watched, and listened, to all of the election coverage during November of last year I was somewhat surprised by the percentage of people identifying themselves as Evangelical Christians who voted for President Obama. I have seen statistics reporting 25% of while evangelicals and a higher percentage of African-American Evangelicals gave their votes to Obama. Given these statistics, President Obama did not make any major inroads with white Evangelicals (although he did make gains with 18-29 year old White-Evangelicals), and the votes he garnered from African Americans are not surprising given the historical significance surrounding his candidacy.

Whether President Obama gained ground with white Evangelicals, African-American Evangelicals, or any other people group who claim to be Evangelicals is not my point. My confusion is this; how in the world did he even get one Evangelical’s vote? Let me first point out that I understand many people who claim to belong to certain groups such as pro-choicers against abortion, moderate Democrats, or God’s gift to women are not necessarily what they claim to be. I am not concerned with these self-deluded individuals. I am writing about those who truly believe they are Evangelical Christians and claim to believe what Jesus Christ had to say.

Conservative and liberal blogs, Talk Radio, and even regular periodicals have all discussed a potential shift in the thinking of some Evangelicals (especially among younger evangelicals). The shift is allegedly away from the historically galvanizing issues of abortion and the protection of marriage to more up to date (lest just say, hip) concerns such as poverty and environmental change.

What!? Has anyone read their Bible lately? Does anyone take what is written their seriously? The Bible, and therefore, the Lord has made it perfectly clear that abortion (outside of protection for the life of the mother and child) is tantamount to murder and marriage is and always will be between one man and one woman (no matter what the law of the land may be). How poverty (which has many causal factors) and the dubious at best issue of climate change have caused a shift in some Evangelical Christian’s thinking is beyond my comprehension!

Please do not misunderstand me; I do believe that the Church, as a body, as well as individuals have a responsibility to help those who are truly poor (that is an article for another day) and that we are to be good stewards of the earth the Lord has given us. However, to place such matters in the same position as the protection of the most vulnerable in our society (the unborn) or the defense of marriage (which holds so much importance to those children who live through a pregnancy) is ludicrous. And to vote for a man who has made it abundantly clear that he does not support the unborn or marriage (and, in fact, has worked strongly against restrictions on abortion of any kind) is in direct conflict with God.

President Obama made it clear, prior to his election, that he was a card-carrying member of the Pro-Abortion crowd. He has trumpeted his desire to sign the Freedom of Choice Act (which might eliminate any of the gains the Pro-Life movement has made over the last few years) and he has stated that he does not support a Federal Marriage Amendment or the Defense of Marriage Act. President Obama has repeatedly rallied against laws which put a stop to the barbaric practice of Partial-Birth Abortion, and has even opposed laws which would give medical aide and comfort to babies who are born alive after botched abortions. What kind of man is this, and is this the person Evangelicals want to say they voted for?

President Obama’s concern for the poor and downtrodden is laudable, but this is not a trait held by Democrat’s alone. Protecting our environment is commendable, but buying into the nebulous science of climate change alarmists shows poor judgment and a failure to research the matter.

Supporting infanticide and the destruction of marriage, on the other hand, is nothing short of evil and a direct attack on the precepts the Lord has laid down in His Word. People who consider themselves true Evangelicals and voted for President Obama should be deeply ashamed.
